Help Your Kids Show Off Their Healthy Smiles

Smiling child at dentistGetting your child to brush isn’t usually the hard part; it’s getting them to brush well that takes a bit more guidance. Teaching your child how to brush their teeth properly is one of the most important things you can do for their oral health. Here’s how to help them build a routine that gives their teeth a more thorough clean.

Technique Matters More Than Time

It sounds simple, but brushing technique matters. Children can happily brush for two minutes and still miss areas of their mouth, particularly around the gumline and the harder-to-reach back teeth (the molars are easy to rush past). Choose a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles so it can comfortably reach around your child’s mouth, and swap it out every three months or once the bristles start to fray.

Work Systematically

Work systematically around the mouth so every tooth gets attention, including the front, back and chewing surfaces. Your child can also gently brush their tongue. Once finished, encourage them to spit out their toothpaste rather than rinsing with water, so the fluoride keeps working.

Stay Involved and Stay Consistent

Young children will usually need help brushing their teeth, even when they’re enthusiastic about doing it themselves. A quick follow-up brush from you can catch anything they’ve missed, and most kids need this kind of help until around age seven or eight.

Consistency helps more than almost anything else. When brushing becomes a normal part of getting ready in the morning and winding down at night, there’s often much less resistance. A two-minute song or a simple timer can make the routine feel like a fun habit rather than a chore.

Building Smiles That Last

None of this needs to be perfect from day one. Small, steady habits now can help your child develop good oral hygiene habits that continue as they grow, and we’re always happy to answer questions along the way.
